David Gross is the finest bass guitar and music teacher who I have had the privilege of studying with. Rather than working through a rigid method book he has customized my lessons based on my ability and goals. Although David has specific ideas about electric bass technique, the focus is always on the music. He has opened up my musical appreciation beyond the Yacht Rock and Smooth Jazz that I had been stuck on for many years. My playlist has expanded markedly since studying with David. I enjoy talking with him about his musical experiences and philosophy.
Check out Theorcolus. It’s a remarkable album and gives an idea of David’s musical genius.
Due to distance and COVID-19 my lessons with David have been a mixture of in-person and Skype. Both work very well. I like the personal interaction at his home studio, but recording Skype lessons for review is most useful. David has had me use a variety of teaching materials, including rhythm studies, Bach Cello pieces, Charlie Parker tunes, fretboard exercises and chord progressions that he created for me to develop basslines over. He has several excellent print and video works that supplement the materials that he creates specifically for me.
In summary, if you put in the work with David you will progress. His approach is more dynamic and eclectic than the previous teachers who I have studied with. I just wish that I had met him many years ago.
